If Creativity is our Method, then Culture is the resource that Creative Activism works with.
Culture is the foundation of creative activism. It is what we draw from, it is what we produce, and it is what we hope to change. Participants start by write down the word they think of when they hear the word “culture.” These definitions are shared and grouped together into: Culture as high art; culture as practices of everyday life; resistant, counter or sub-cultures, and popular, often commercial, culture. Through a slide presentation we explore how each type of culture can provide a resource for activism: employing mimetic and aesthetic and prophetic strategies of high art and understanding root desires met by commercial culture and devising “moral alternatives”. Finally, the importance of changing everyday patterns of meaning, understanding, and living in order to have sustained social change is emphasized.
