A slide show and discussion of creative tactics used effectively in social movements throughout history, focusing on the United States. Case studies may include: Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, Prophet Muhammad, American Revolution, Native American Ghost Dance, United Farm Workers, Civil Rights Movement, Black/Brown/Red Power Movements, 1960s Counter-Culture, Three Waves of Feminism, ACT-UP, and Occupy. We also show the Dark Side of creative activism: Nazis, advertisers, and terrorists, to make the point about the importance of always considering the ethics of one’s practice. In each case generalizable principles are extracted and explained (e.g. Demonstrate Your Politics, Make the Invisible Visible, Tell a Story, etc.).
